Surah Maryam [19:9-11]
“He said, my lord, make for me a sign.”
So Zakariyya says, “Make me a sign, ya Allah. Give me a sign of this miracle, of me having a child.”
And Allah says, “Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights consistently.”
And so Zakkariyya goes out to people and he goes up to the Mehrab, and he points to them and says, “Praise Allah in the morning and in the evening.”
What do we get from that? What do we understand from that? You get a big blessing from Allah (swt), and you are not allowed to speak to people. For some people that might be enough, that maybe they can’t share this blessing.
But the happiness is so much in Zakariyya, he still goes up onto the Mehrab, and he still points to the people and tells them to make tasbih, in the morning and in the evening. That’s a good response to blessings. Zakariyya is teaching us how to respond to blessings. You can see the stages that Zakariyya goes through. He goes through some disbelief.
He says, “Wait a second. Allah, I am old. My wife is old. We can’t have children.”
But Allah reminds him and consoles him. He says, “it is easy for me.”
So, whatever our dua is, whatever our silent call upon Allah (swt) is, it’s easy for Allah. This is a reminder for us. And the second reminder is that once we are given the good news of that blessings – we get the promotion or we get the thing that we desire, the spouse that we desire, or whatever it was – then we go to the next step, which is, not only praising Allah (swt) but reminding others about the blessings of Allah (swt). That’s beautiful.
Not just praising Him yourself, but, in addition to that, getting others onboard, getting others to remind themselves of Allah’s many, many blessings. Not just in the day, and not just at night, but both in the night and day.
سَبِّحُوا بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا
During the day and in the evening. All throughout the day, praise Allah (swt), and glorify Allah (swt). Be thankful for the blessings that you have.
That is why the Prophet (pbuh) said that the affair of the believers is amazing because:
عجَبًا لِأَمر المُؤمِن
Everything is good for the believer. If something good happens, the believer is thankful, and if something bad happens, the believer is patient and perseveres.
So this blessing that Zakariyya receives of a son after a period of patience is incredible. He now has the successor to fulfil his legacy. He is incredibly blessed, and he makes that known.
He was already giving khutbahs and he was already on the Mehrab, but he was just so overjoyed that even though he could not speak to people, he is still pointed it out to them.
“You better remember Allah (swt) for all the blessings He has given us.”
So, may Allah help us to be grateful to Him as He deserves.
Ameen.

Thank you Imam. Assalam Alaikum. SubhanAllahe wa behamdehe, a beautiful reminder. We cannot thank Allah enough, not just for giving us the blessing of making Duas but also everything He Gives even without our asking and without any effort on our part, our heartbeats, the air we breath every second, our abilities, rain, sunshine,
sleep …the list is endless. Even if we did sujood for everything and for our wants and duas fulfilled (and not fulfilled too, as Allah Only Knows whats best for us) it would never be enough. May Allah Forgive us for not being as grateful at times and may He Make us as we should be. Ameen
Ameen. Indeed we can never be thankful enough, alhamdulillah!
