I just wanted to share a reflection today on Surah Maryam [19:1].
Allah says:
‘كهيعص‘
(Kaaf, Ha, Ya, ‘Ayn, Sad). That’s the first verse.
‘ذِكْرُ رَحْمَتِ رَبِّكَ عَبْدَهُ زَكَرِيَّا‘
and then he says:
‘إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا‘
I wanted to focus just on this one verse about Zakariyya. It talks about how he calls out to his lord ‘نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا ‘. So nadaa’ is to call out. It’s like in Surah Yusuf where someone calls out that the vessel has been stolen, and they call it out and they announce it. That’s like ‘نداء ‘. It’s like the caller on the Day of Judgement. It’s a huge, loud call but, Zakariyya – the word that’s used ‘نِدَاءً خَفِيًّ ‘. It’s a huge call but its ‘خَفِيًّ‘ and khafi comes from the word which means hidden; it means subtle; it means quiet.
So it’s a quiet call, which is at the same time huge. There is a sense of greatness, of might, to this call. Zakariyya is calling out to his lord, making dua and it’s a huge dua. It’s heavy on the heart, it’s heavy in his voice, but yet it’s a quiet dua. It’s in silence. It’s in isolation. There’s no one watching. It’s private.
It reminds me of the people on the Day of Judgement who get Allah’s shade; those people – there is many groups of those people & one of the groups are those people, which remember Allah in silence, in isolation. And they remember Allah and their eyes well up with tears, emotion for their lord. That’s what it reminds me of. Those private moments with Allah.
‘نِدَاءً خَفِيًّ ‘
Such a beautiful phrase – just two words and it is just so powerful that nadaa‘ is this powerful thing and khafia is the opposite. It’s something quiet; but yet we understand what it means when Zakariyya is making this huge dua.
‘قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّي وَاشْتَعَلَ الرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا’
‘Ya Allah, I am old, my bones are weak. I’m afraid for what’s to come. My spouse is old.’
‘فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا‘
‘So give me someone who will be a resource after me, and he will inherit what I have and he will inherit my legacy.’
And so the way he makes this dua is ‘نِدَاءً خَفِيًّ‘.
That was it for today. Insha’Allah I will see you all in the next reflection.
